Packing Tips

To make your storage project as pleasant and efficient as possible, we have prepared these helpful hints.  A few minutes spent now in planning will make it easier to retrieve stored items when they are needed.

Preparing to Pack

You may need corrugated boxes, paper or cloth padding, wardrobe boxes, mirror boxes and special boxes for breakables.  You will need quality sealing tape and a maker for labeling contents.  See our packaging store for available supplies.

Packing

• Disassemble furniture, if possible and cover with padding (interior of BOD is padded)
• Pack books and papers in small boxes, 1.5 cubic foot
• Use properly sized boxes to make moving easier
• Protect items with paper or cloth padding material
• Fill boxes completely and label with contents
• Place heavy items in bottom of boxes
• Wrap mirrors and pictures in clean paper and pack into mirror boxes.  Do not lay flat
• Pack clothing in wardrobe boxes
• Thoroughly clean and drain appliances before storing.  Tape down moving parts.  When storing refrigerator or freezer, sprinkle baking soda over flat surfaces and leave door ajar

Filling Your BODS Container

• Load heavy items in the bottom with smaller items on top
• Place items you need often in front of container
• Distribute weight evenly as possible in the container
• Storage large or bulky items in center of container
• Most sofas can be stood on end to make the best use of space
• Mattresses and box springs should be stored in protective bags or cartons
• List stored items, with location, on inventory list.  Update as items are removed or added

Safety Precautions

• When lifting heavy boxes, bend at the knees instead of the waist, grip box firmly and hold it close to your body
• Do not store liquids, flammables or hazardous materials
• Do not remove weather-resistant cover from the container
• Do not let children or animals play in, on or around the container
• When not packing, lock door with your padlock and close weather-resistant cover

When you finish packing, call your BODS dealer to arrange for pick up.
